KnoxAchieves Tuition Assistance Program Launched

With college tuition on the rise and local industry clamoring for an enhanced workforce, a new program called KnoxAchieves that is designed to meet those challenges was launched this morning at Fulton High School. KnoxAchieves is a privately-funded, college-tuition-assistance program for 2009 graduates of Knox County’s public high schools.

Ribbon Cut on South Knoxville Senior Center Walking Trail and Pavilion

Knoxville Senior Center visitors have done it again! They wanted a walking trail, and they got it. Knox County Mayor and 9th District Commissioners Paul Pinkston and Mike Brown cut the ribbon on the walking trail and pavilion, fully equipped with picnic tables last week. Covenant Health was on hand to present walkers with healthy walking techniques as the Mayor, Commissioners and seniors took an inaugural walk of the track.

County FluMist Clinics Expand to Include Younger Children

The 2008 School FluMist Vaccination Program kick offs on Monday, September 22, with clinics scheduled in schools, daycares, and Head Start facilities through October 17th. A second round of FluMist clinics will be held between December 2nd and 22nd to provide the second dose of vaccine required for children under 9 years of age who have never received flu vaccine in the past.

Final Second Saturday Concert Schedule Celebrates Summer's End

County financial report cited for excellence 12 years running

The Knox County Finance Department has received its 12th consecutive Award of Excellence for the comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR).The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) notified John Troyer, County Senior Director of Finance, of the award last week. According to GFOA, the award is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting and represents a significant accomplishment by the Knox County financial team.

Mayor's Office to Engage Services of Retired State Auditor

Mayor Mike Ragsdale announced today that Clifford Tucker, CPA, will be retained on a contract basis to serve as Financial Compliance Officer for Knox County Government. Tucker, a 32-year veteran of the State Comptroller's Office, was the Knoxville-based state official in charge of assisting Knox County with the Purchasing Card Audit.

Knox County Health Department Receives $250K Grant To Address Diabetes

"Knox County Health Department's (KCHD) Healthy Weight Program has received a $250,000 state-funded grant through Project Diabetes. The grant, called Comprehensive Approach to Reducing Diabetes (CARD), will allow the Healthy Weight Program to expand its efforts to address diabetes and obesity issues in Knox County. CARD'’s goal is to reduce the risk of diabetes and related complications through worksite wellness initiatives and community-based interventions.
